How do I get rid of age spots?

September 17, 2024 by w b

“How do I get rid of age spots?” Our clients often ask us this question. And, if you’ve asked yourself this question, read on because this article will answer it!

But before we answer that burning question, let’s look at what causes age spots in the first place.

Age spots result from your body producing excess melanin, often caused by overexposure to UV light and sometimes a deficiency in vitamin B12. People who spend a lot of time outdoors over many years without suitable sunscreen or who use tanning beds are more at risk. If you don’t have age spots and want to prevent them from appearing, be sure not to use tanning beds. Avoid burning your skin, and wear good sunscreen daily on all areas exposed to the sun, including the backs of your hands.

How do I get rid of age spots?

How do I get rid of age spots?

Age spots can be treated with many treatments. The most effective are IPL laser and Microneedling. Chemical peels can be very effective as well.

IPL:

IPL is a very quick treatment. We use an Intense Pulse Light machine to heat the melanin in the age spots, which causes the melanin-rich cells to disburse and lighten the spots. It is the fastest way to see age spots become lighter. Results are normally around ten days. The spots darken first and then slowly slough off.

Microneedling:

Microneedling creates controlled inflammation that encourages removing damaged skin cells and stimulates new cells, helping to fade hyperpigmented cells over time. It can take up to three weeks to see results, sometimes longer. This treatment works within the skin’s own healing ability, which is why results vary from person to person.

Chemical Peels:

Customised chemical peels work superficially on the top layer of the skin to exfoliate off excess pigment and improve overall skin texture and tone. Some peels also work as a tyrosinase inhibitor to help prevent more excess pigment from forming in the future. If you choose to combat age spots with this treatment, you will undoubtedly require multiple treatments. The actual number varies from client to client. You can have these treatments three weeks apart; however, it can take up to 6 months to notice great results.

Choosing Your Treatment:

All treatments require a complimentary consultation first. This consultation is crucial; IPL and chemical peels can create hyper or hypopigmentation if unsuitable. Certain medications, as well as lifestyle factors, can prevent you from having any of these treatments. All treatments have potential side effects, so we conduct thorough consultations to determine the most suitable treatment.

After Your Treatment:

After your treatment, we recommend that you always use sunscreen daily, rain or shine, and use corrective skincare designed to slow melanin production in the skin.

Using Vitamin A at night and Vitamin C during the day can help maintain results, and exfoliating twice a week to slough off dead skin cells will also help.

What’s the difference between IPL and Electrolysis?

July 18, 2024 by w b

At Woman, we are delighted to offer both IPL and electrolysis as hair removal methods. However, clients often ask us, “What’s the difference between IPL and Electrolysis?”. So, in this article, we thought we’d answer that question. Read on for all the details.

What's the difference between IPL and Electrolysis?

What’s the difference between IPL and Electrolysis?

How does each treatment work?

Electrolysis treats the hair follicle with an HF and DC current directly into each individual follicle using a superfine surgical needle. The hair is removed at the time of treatment.

Electrolysis can be used on fine, blonde, fluffy hair and darker, thick hair.

IPL is an Intense pulse light. This light works by pulsing light into the hair root, causing the hair to go into its resting phase. The hair then falls out in a minimum of 10 days and gradually grows less in the treatment area over time.

IPL can only be used on darker and slightly thicker hairs. It is suitable for larger areas as the treatment takes less time than electrolysis.

Effectiveness of Treatments:

A person requires fewer treatments of IPL than electrolysis to get good hair reduction. However, IPL is not classified as permanent hair removal. This means that you may need more treatments in the future.

To get permanent hair removal with electrolysis, you may need up to 40 sessions. As hair is treated individually, the treatment takes longer, and only small areas can be treated, e.g., the Lip or chin.

Duration and Frequency:

For IPL, we recommend around eight sessions. Six to eight weeks apart. Electrolysis can take up to forty sessions, and we recommend these are taken two weeks apart.

What does the treatment feel like?

IPL is a hot flick initially, and the area can be mildly tender. Sensitive areas, such as Brazilians, can be more uncomfortable.

Electrolysis can be painful to some clients as you are using an HF and DC current directly into the hair follicle. After electrolysis, clients will be slightly red and feel tender for a few hours. Any discomfort can be minimised by taking Paracetamol thirty minutes before each treatment and applying a cool compress post-treatment.

What preparation and post-treatment advice do you give?

For IPL and Electrolysis, the client must smooth shave before the appointment. After the treatment, the client should refrain from using any exfoliants or acids on the affected area. The client should also avoid excessive exercise where they sweat or swimming in chlorine. We also caution against exposure to chemicals such as painting a room, all for a minimum of 48 hours. This is standard for both procedures.

Which is the best treatment for me?

We never carry out either treatment without a full consultation. We need to check your hair and skin colour, discuss the area you’d like treated, and discuss your medical history.

Upon consultation, we’d also discuss the number of sessions needed to reach your goals so you know how much it will cost. So, why not contact us to arrange yours?

IPL Treatment in Nelson

August 16, 2022 by w b

If you’re looking for IPL treatment in Nelson, you’ve come to the right place! We can help you with permanent hair reduction and skin rejuvenation using our state-of-the-art IPL machine, Sirius.

IPL Treatment in Nelson:

The Machine – Sirius. The Best in the Business:

Our IPL machine has brilliantly intelligent technology. This includes patented narrow band Ellipse IPL technology with dual filters. These state-of-the-art systems allow us to safely and successfully treat a vast range of concerns.

PLUS Expertise:

ipl treatments in nelson

Of course, there’s more to successful IPL treatment in Nelson than the top-class kit. You also need highly-skilled therapists, which is where we come in.

At Woman, we have invested time and resources to ensure that Delene and Aimiee are educated to a standard well beyond the regular manufacturer’s training. Both have completed the most comprehensive theory and practical 3-day programme in New Zealand. During three days of intensive training, they covered IPL & Laser Science and put their knowledge into practice at the NZ Laser Institute Training Centre under the watchful eye of expert tutors with over 30 years of combined industry experience.

They’ve also followed this up with a one-day practical course with the same training provider, the NZ Laser Training Institute.

Why Training Matters:

But why does this matter to you? Well, for two significant reasons:

  1. It keeps you safe! Although IPL is a widely used modality and growing in popularity, not all machines are created equal. Some devices are not self-calibrating. This means that their energy output can vary hugely between each shot, which in turn, can lead to burns. If a practitioner has not undergone the necessary training to help them understand the treatment they are performing or the machine they are using, then they do not know to correctly select a client’s treatment parameters for a successful treatment plan. Poorly administered IPL can lead to burns, permanent pigmentation and scarring.
  2. It saves you money: The intensive training courses we complete as IPL therapists give us in-depth knowledge of how to tailor treatment plans to provide optimal results. We know that IPL treatments are an investment, and we want to help you get the best bang for your buck! When you undertake a treatment plan, we use everything we learned in training to keep assessing your progress. We can also judge when it is appropriate to change your treatment plan.

If you are considering IPL, please remember the industry is unfortunately unregulated. Anybody can purchase a machine and begin offering IPL or laser services. So, it’s essential to do your homework on your practitioner. Do call in and speak to Delene or Aimiee, as they are experts in this field. We are always happy to answer questions on IPL treatments.

Hair Removal Treatments @ Woman

March 24, 2021 by w b

As we head into the Nelson autumn and winter, we know it’s tempting to delay your regular hair removal treatments. We understand that… Waxing and laser hair removal are not the most pleasurable treatments. And you were going to be wearing jeans and trousers all winter anyway! But, at Woman, we think there are some good reasons to continue with your hair removal maintenance in winter. Read on to discover more.

hair removal treatments in nelson winter

Hair Removal Treatments in Autumn and Winter:

Winter Waxing:

Your body hair naturally grows in three phases. To get the best removal results, you need to catch the hair in the anagen (initial) growth phase every time. So establishing a good wax routine is essential.

With consistent waxing throughout winter, you’ll eventually find that we’re removing all the hairs in the first phase of growth every four weeks. So, when spring comes around again, you’ll find regrowth is finer and slower.

It’s easy to get caught out in winter… You’ve had your legs covered for so long you forget there’s a bit of fuzz going on below the knee… Then you get asked to an event and realise you need to slip a skirt and sheer tights on! If that’s the case, please don’t reach for the razor; call us instead to book a wax. Shaving will leave your leg hairs uneven, meaning that they will not grow simultaneously, making it more difficult to achieve a smooth finish that lasts.

IPL in Icy Months:

We can carry out IPL at any time of year. But, the winter months are ideal to begin IPL hair removal treatment. This is because before (and after) any IPL treatment, we’ll ask you to avoid a few things. These include sun exposure, fake tan and chlorinated swimming pools. All things you’re more likely to come into contact with over the summer months.

IPL is a fabulous hair removal solution to prepare you for next spring. We offer a complimentary consultation and patch test. Prices start at $75 per treatment. A series of treatments (every 4 to 8 weeks) is required, depending on the individual. But we’ll tailor a treatment schedule for you at your free consultation.

If you’re ready to schedule your winter maintenance hair removal treatments at our Nelson city spa, contact us here to book you in!

IPL – IPL Hair Removal & Skin Rejuvenation

December 4, 2019 by w b

At Woman Beauty in Nelson, we have been offering IPL hair removal and skin rejuvenation with our ELOS IPL machine for many years. We have achieved excellent results for many of our clients. However, we found we could no longer get replacement parts for our old machine. So, we recently upgraded and in this article, we’d like to introduce you to Sirius, our brand new IPL machine by Candela. Just landed to help you with your hair removal and skin rejuvenation goals!

IPL Hair-Removal and Skin Rejuvenation Nelson

IPL for Hair Removal & Skin Rejuvenation:

We use Sirius, our new IPL machine for permanent hair reduction and skin rejuvenation.

In Nelson, we’re lucky that we have such high sunshine hours. The downside is that many people end up with unwanted sun damage. Delene and Bridgette have been helping many of our clients with their skin rejuvenation goals over the winter months.

Sirius the Best in the Business:

Our new machine has extremely intelligent technology. This includes patented narrow band Ellipse IPL technology with dual filters. These state of the art systems allow us to safely and successfully treat a huge range of concerns. We use the machine’s customisable pulse duration to determine each client’s safest treatment parameters based on their Fitzpatrick skin type.

Sirius & Specific Skin Concerns:

With our smart new IPL machine, we can safely and successfully treat a huge range of concerns. These concerns include Rosacea, sun damage, broken capillaries and diffused redness.

Why Certified Training is Important:

Although IPL is a widely used modality and growing in popularity, not all machines are created equal. Some machines are not self-calibrating. This means that their energy output can vary hugely between each shot, which in turn, can lead to burns.

If a practitioner has not undergone the necessary training to help them understand the treatment they are performing or the machine they are using, then they do not have the knowledge to correctly select a client’s treatment parameters for a successful treatment plan. Additionally, they are unlikely to be fully informed to guarantee client safety, or how to troubleshoot if things did go wrong.

Badly administered IPL can lead to burns, permanent pigmentation and scarring.

If you are considering IPL, it’s important to do your homework on your practitioner as the industry is unfortunately unregulated. This means that anybody can purchase a machine and begin offering IPL or laser services.

You can rest assured that you are safe with Woman Beauty in Nelson. Delene and Bridgette are both certified by NZ Laser Training, and Hayley will join them in early December.

This training means firstly that your safety is paramount. Additionally, it arms us with in-depth knowledge of how to tailor treatment plans to give you optimal results. When you undertake a treatment plan we use everything we learned in training to keep assessing your progress. We can also judge when it is appropriate to make changes to your treatment plan.

Ready to get started with hair removal or skin rejuvenation?

Initial consultations for IPL hair removal and skin rejuvenation are free. We recommend a test patch at least 24 to 48 hours before your first treatment. The number of treatments can differ and we determine this on a case by case basis. We recommend making an initial appointment to fill out the consultation form and perform a test patch.

We have a special running on IPL hair removal. Buy five treatments on one area and receive your sixth free. Please contact us to book your consultation time.
